Lando Norris took a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, leading Max Verstappen by almost 21 seconds by the time he took the chequered flag. Oscar Piastri made up for a disappointing qualifying by finishing in third.
Norris’ win may ultimately have been comfortable, but it wasn’t without some risky moments – the Brit surviving two close calls with the Marina Bay Circuit’s walls. His triumph in Singapore marks his third grand prix win, as he continues to chip away at the gap to rival Verstappen, which now stands at 52 points with six races remaining.
Realistically then, Norris will be banking on Verstappen failing to finish at least once. In Singapore, a second-place finish saw the Dutchman maximize his result despite the RB20 falling behind both McLaren and Ferrari on pace. Climbing from fifth to third again highlighted Oscar Piastri as one of the strongest drivers on the grid and continued his and McLaren’s excellent podium-finishing run – Singapore marking the Aussie’s seventh of the season. The Papaya team continues to lead the constructors’ championship with a 20-point advantage.
The Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were split by Charles Leclerc, Russell being just too far ahead for Leclerc to catch even with a tyre advantage. Leclerc’s fifth place finish may leave him wondering what could have been after a costly qualifying error set him back. Hamilton meanwhile, was left vulnerable after an early stop forced him into a challenging long second stint as he struggled home in sixth.
Carlos Sainz Jr. made gains to climb from tenth to seventh, while in the pit-stops Fernando Alonso jumped ahead of Nico Hülkenberg to finish eighth for Aston Martin. The final points position went to Sergio Pérez in tenth, denying Franco Colapinto consecutive points-scoring finishes. And, in what increasingly looks to be Daniel Ricciardo’s final race in Formula 1, the eight-time grand prix winner could only finish 18th for RB, but he was able to steal the fastest lap point away from Norris at the end, perhaps a farewell gift to his Red Bull colleague and friend Verstappen.
