Video: Pikes Peak still looks terrifying

02nd June 2021

I will freely admit that I am not a fan of heights, so much so in fact that I'm glad I'm not taller. Which is why watching Pikes Peak has always held an extra level of tension for me, given the terrifying 14,000-foot plunge off the side of the Rocky Mountains which awaits the unwary.

This helmet-cam view from Derek Boyd makes the point very strongly, with at various moments just sky visible in front of the car. Boyd Auto Racing first ran the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2014 with what had been a Mitsubishi Evo X road car with some questionable performance upgrades by a previous owner. By 2020 the Evo X was barely recognisable with little remaining of the original car beyond the engine block and bodyshell. However those years of continuous development paid off with Derek Boyd running a 10:11.446 and finishing tenth overall ahead of some very specialised machinery.
