Mid-Year - Refocussing Your Health and Wellbeing Goals

19th June 2024

The mid-point of the year is an ideal time to reflect on the health and wellbeing goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, remember, those things you set out for yourself in your New Year’s resolutions? Mid-year reviews provide a valuable opportunity to assess your progress, adjust your health and wellbeing goals and refocus your efforts for the remainder of the year. Here are some tips and resources to help you carry out a successful mid-year review and stay on track with your wellness journey.

Reflect on Your Progress

Take some time to review the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Celebrate your achievements and acknowledge areas where you may have fallen short. Reflecting on both your successes and challenges can provide valuable insights and motivation.

Celebrating your achievements plays a crucial role in enhancing wellbeing and motivation, according to various scientific studies. Recognition and celebration of accomplishments trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, which can reinforce positive behaviours and boost overall morale (the motivation compass). Additionally, gratitude and acknowledgement can significantly impact our mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, while promoting better sleep and overall happiness (PositivePsychology.com).

Reassess Your Goals

As you reflect, consider whether your goals are still relevant and achievable. It's okay to adjust them based on your current circumstances and progress. Setting realistic and flexible goals can help maintain motivation.

Having realistic goals means they are much more likely to be achieved. When your goals are attainable, you are more likely to stay focused and committed. This will help you maintain a positive outlook and keeps you on a cycle of continuous progress and achievement (James Clear) (Scott H Young).

Set New Milestones

If the goals you set out for yourself at the beginning of the year have slipped because they felt too big, take this time to them down into smaller, manageable milestones. This can make your goals feel more attainable and can provide that motivational sense of accomplishment as you reach each milestone.

Stay Flexible

Life can be unpredictable, sometimes the best intentions don’t go to plan. Rather than beating yourself up about the things you haven’t achieved yet, use this time to re-evaluate. It's important to stay flexible and adaptable. Adjust your plan as needed and keep moving forward.
